I am often asked how to choose a print or a painting and it can feel like there is so much choice sometimes. But it doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you're looking for a large statement piece for your living room or something calm and personal for a bedroom I have found that a few simple principles can really help - so here's my guide ......
Before you think about size or colour, think about feeling. What do you want the room to say? A bold, abstract floral print can bring energy and joy, while a soft still life or coastal seascape might bring calm and quiet to a bedroom or a dining room. The lovely thing about art is that it can really set the tone of a space and create a real sense of place.
Scale matter does matter because a small print on a large wall can look lost, while an oversized canvas in a small room can feel a bit 'too much'. As a general rule of thumb, wall art should fill around two-thirds to three-quarters of the available wall space but rules can be broken! Sometimes an oversized canvas can look stunning. Judi Glover Art prints are available in a range of sizes from 30cm upwards. If you're unsure, try cutting out paper to the size of the print and holding it against the wall — it's a surprisingly effective trick before you commit.
Wall art doesn't need to match your colours exactly but it can be really lovely to find an 'echo' to it. Look for a colour in the artwork that is present in the room — it could be just a cushion or a rug. This creates a sense of harmony without everything looking too coordinated.
If your room is neutral, a piece with warm yellows, rich reds or vibrant greens can become a beautiful focal point. If your space is already colourful, a quieter, more tonal piece might provide welcome balance and enhance cosiness or create a bit of drama.
Original paintings are unique and irreplaceable. They can become family 'treasures' but high-quality art prints and canvas prints allow you to bring the same beauty into your home at a more accessible price point. Giclee prints, in particular, are printed on museum-quality paper with archival inks, meaning the colours stay vivid and beautiful for decades.
Canvas prints have a warmth and texture that feels closer to an original painting — the brushstrokes and painterly quality come through beautifully, especially in larger sizes.
The right frame can elevate a print enormously. A simple white or natural wood frame suits most interiors and lets the artwork speak for itself. A darker frame adds drama and works well with bold, colourful pieces. If in doubt, a classic white frame is rarely wrong but a frame isn't always necessary, particularly with canvas prints.
I find that sometimes ultimately, the best wall art is the piece you keep coming back to. If something stops you in your tracks — if it makes you feel something — that's the one. Art in your home should bring you joy every time you walk past it.
