A walk along the English and Welsh coastal paths is an exciting journey through a rich history of smugglers’ coves, long-trodden by-ways and old harbour quays. In my view a coastal walk is unlike any other as it is shaped not only by the ancient footsteps of people just like us but also by the beautiful and ever-present views of the sea.
In my coastal paintings I try to capture the experience of being a part of the sea and the land together in one breath-taking coastal view - it’s a perfect ‘living in the moment’ contemplation of nature and a huge source of inspiration for the coastal art collection.
The Pembrokeshire coastal path is a diverse and ancient landscape with nearly all the rocks underneath the land surface being formed 290 million years ago which is difficult to imagine until you see the spectacular rocks themselves. In my painting ‘Towards Porthgain’ I try to capture the Atlantic breakers as they find all the little coves and crash onto the beaches. Looking inland you can see the flat, undulating farmland which takes you to the small coastal fishing villages and the incentive to get there and have fresh-fried fish and chips in Porthgain, for example, is huge! ‘Towards Porthgain’ is also available as a greeting card, a coastal canvas print and a coastal art print which can also be framed.
The Cornish Coastal path is part of The South West Coast Path - 600 miles of it and is just beautiful and a challenge too with its headlands dipping quickly down into little coves and back up a hill again especially on a hot, sunny day. Sandy beaches and coastal valleys make it such a special place to walk and stop for a well-deserved Cornish Pasty. The Cornwall art print and Cornwall canvas print ‘Cornish Coastal Path’ captures the coastal path near Mevagissey and as a coastal artist as well as a landscape artist it was a joy to paint. Walking along the path gave me glimpses of the sea, green farmland, pink stonecrop succulents, gorse and wildflowers. ‘Cornish Coastal Path’ is also available as a fine art greeting card.
The Wilderness Coastline is the ‘edge’ of Exmoor National Park - a really dramatic coastline of rugged cliffs, dense coastal woodlands and the best sure-footed climbers - the lovely, wild mountain goats that live on The Valley of the Rocks - and sometimes you really feel like you are in another world. This coastal walk runs from Minehead to Combe Martin and is such a contrast of scenery. In the painting ‘The Wilderness Coast’ I try to capture the gorgeous Wilderness Coastline using a rich palette of yellow ochre, burnt sienna and prussian blue to describe the flora and fauna, the perched cliffs and the unique coastal sea views. The author Rayner Winn describes the challenging physical feat to walking this path in her uplifting and heartening book ‘The Salt Path’. The Wilderness Coast is available as a coastal art print, coastal canvas print and a coastal greetings card.
The Jurassic coast stretches for 95 miles from Exmouth in East Devon to Old Harry Rocks in Studland Bay in Dorset. A journey along this coastal path is full of history and stories of smugglers’ coves and old war fortifications. Quarrying, farming and fishing have all had a unique influence on the land and a rich and varied wildlife makes this a wonderful coastal journey to make. The art print of the the Jurassic Coast shows a windswept land of majestic white cliffs and a big sky and immediately I am back on this extraordinary Dorset Coast under a dramatic, windswept sky ‘Jurassic Coast’ is available as a canvas print, framed print and a coastal greeting card.
